"The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit." — Psalm 34:18
Brokenhearted. The word itself means to be overwhelmed by grief and disappointment. It’s a state of being many of us know all too well—feeling the weight of sadness, despair, or even hopelessness pressing down on our spirits.
Have you ever felt depressed or overwhelmed with sadness? I know I have. And if you’re reading this, you probably have too. You’re not alone in feeling the depth of life’s challenges.
Life, as we all know, is a paradox: both beautiful and challenging, joyous and painful. It’s filled with moments of profound celebration and moments of heartache—sometimes because of our own choices, and sometimes due to circumstances entirely beyond our control.
The Comfort of God’s Word
Thank God for the gift of His Word. The Scriptures are a lifeline, offering comfort and hope as we navigate the ups and downs of life. In the Psalms, we see David, a man after God’s own heart, cry out in fear, anxiety, and even despair. But alongside those cries, we also see declarations of God’s faithfulness, victory, and strength.
The Psalms remind us that we are not alone in our struggles. David’s honesty with God invites us to be honest too. It’s okay to feel brokenhearted—it doesn’t mean God is far away. In fact, His Word tells us the opposite: He is near to the brokenhearted.
The Truth Over Our Feelings
You might not feel God’s presence in your pain right now, but His nearness is a truth you can cling to. Feelings are temporary; they ebb and flow like the tides. But God’s Word? It remains unchanging, steadfast, and true.
When we allow God’s truth to penetrate our hearts and minds, something begins to happen. Slowly, we find strength to endure, peace to calm the storm within us, and hope to press on. His Word brings renewal and restoration to our souls.
Pour Out Your Heart
God is near, and because of that, you don’t need to hide your pain or pretend to be okay. He invites us to come to Him, just as we are. Psalm 62:8 says, "Pour out your hearts to Him, for God is our refuge."
This is the key: to experience God’s comfort in the midst of life’s trials, we must be intentional about seeking Him and trusting His promises. Pour out your heart to Him, even when the words are messy or broken. Cry, grieve, and mourn if you need to—He can handle it.
A Promise You Can Trust
God is near to the brokenhearted. That’s His promise. And when God makes a promise, we can trust it completely. If you find yourself in a season of heartbreak, lean into Him. Seek His presence, and expect His comfort to meet you where you are.
He sees your pain. He hears your cries. And He is near.
